The Hong Kong Radio Control Soaring Society has organized a dynamic
soaring contest
on Sunday, 17, January
2010. This is the second time a DS contest
was successfully held. Although
many attempts to hold DS contests have been
tried before. This time the venue
to hold this DS contest was
Fei Ngo Shan east-facing slope, which is well known for DSing in
Hong Kong. There are not many DS capable slopes in Hong Kong, Fei Ngo
Shan's DS slope is good for strong easterly wind, however, due to its
limitation in backside space and a ridge nearby, its achievable upper
speed record is expected to be rather limited. Also,
for safety reason, only foamy class and 60" moldy class are allowed to
run in this slope. There were 9
and 6 diehard DS pilots to join the
contest for foamy and 60" classes, respectively. The contest
was started at about 2:30pm with wind speed varied from 3m/s to
6m/s.
Two classes of contests were run; the first class is a foamy class, and
the second class is an open class. Five rounds of contest in each class
were conducted. In each round, a pilot has 30 seconds to gain high to
enter DS track. Once entered, the glider has to complete 20 circles. The
maximum speed obtained from this 20-circle run was recorded as the
score. We used the ProSpeed radar gun to measure the glider speed in air
during the DS run. In the 60" moldy class,
Kenneth showed off his master skill in sheering his MiniNYX along the
contour of the black side slope and steadily gaining speed in 20 lapses.
His performance was so good that he took lead through out the 5 round
contest and finally grabbed the champion title. In the foamy class, most
of the models used are Bat. They do have speed advantage over other
foamies such as Bee. Eric and Ken28 were in a closed match until Ken28
made a mistake and crashed his plane in the fifth round, that enabled
Eric to grab the champion for the foamy class. Congratulation
to the winners! Here are the results: |
